Smart Fill Photo Selection Explained

A simple explanation of how PYM picks your best moments

Updated this week

What is Smart Fill?

Smart Fill is your shortcut for “I want a beautiful overview, but I don’t want to scroll through 8,000 photos.”

When you turn it on, PYM looks at a chosen period (for example, a month) and automatically suggests the best photo for each day from your camera roll. You stay in control, but the heavy lifting is done for you.

Think of it as a smart helper that knows the difference between “special memory” and “screenshot of a package tracking page”.

What does Smart Fill look for in a “good” photo?

Smart Fill doesn’t see your life the way you do, but it does look for a few clear signs that a photo matters:

  • People & faces
Photos with people in them usually get more love than pictures of random objects. So faces get a boost.

  • Your favorites
If you’ve hearted or favorited a photo in your camera roll, that tells us: “This one matters.” Those photos get extra priority.

  • Edited photos
If you’ve taken the time to crop, brighten, or add a filter, that’s another strong signal that the photo is important to you.

  • Clear & good quality
Sharp, well-lit photos are more likely to be chosen than very dark, blurry, or accidental shots.

All of this together helps Smart Fill guess: “If I had to pick one moment from this day, what would it be?”

What does Smart Fill usually skip?

To keep your timeline meaningful (and not filled with random screenshots), Smart Fill will usually try to avoid:

  • Screenshots (chats, tickets, boarding passes, memes, etc.)

  • Photos of documents, receipts and whiteboards

  • Very similar duplicates (10 almost-identical photos in a row)

  • Very blurry, dark, or accidental pocket shots

  • Long burst series where only one or two photos look nice

That doesn’t mean these photos are deleted or hidden from your phone — they’re just not first in line when we pick your “best” memory of the day.

What happens on days with lots of photos?

Some days are “nothing special”, other days are weddings, birthdays, holidays or big milestones. On days with many photos, Smart Fill will:

  • Look for the strongest “this matters” signals

  • Try to avoid suggesting 10 almost-identical group shots in a row

  • Pick one clear highlight for that day

You can always change that choice if you prefer a different moment.

What if my favourite photo wasn’t picked?

That can absolutely happen — Smart Fill is smart, but it’s not you.

Common reasons:

  • The photo looks similar to another one that scored slightly higher.

  • It’s a bit darker or blurrier than another photo from the same day.

  • It’s a screenshot or document that Smart Fill tried to avoid.

  • You haven’t favourited or edited it, so it didn’t stand out as “special”.

Good news: you’re always the boss.

You can:

  • Open the Smart Fill suggestions

  • Go to that day

  • Replace the suggested photo with the one you love most

(Exact buttons may differ per version, but the idea is: tap the day → change photo.

Why are some days left empty?

Sometimes Smart Fill simply doesn’t find a photo that feels right for that day.

In that case it prefers to leave the day blank rather than forcing a random or low-quality shot into your story. If you want to fill the gap:

  • You can manually pick a photo from that day.

  • Or just leave it empty — your story doesn’t have to be “perfect” to be meaningful.

Can I still edit Smart Fill’s choices?

Yes, always. Smart Fill is a starting point, not a final decision. You can:

  • Remove any photos you don’t like

  • Adjust how a photo is framed — we auto-crop, but you can change it to what feels right for you

  • Replace a suggested photo with another one from the same day

  • Skip certain days completely

You stay in full control of what ends up in your journal, album, or printed product.

Does Smart Fill change or delete anything in my camera roll?

No.Smart Fill never deletes, moves, or edits photos in your camera roll. It only looks at them to suggest which ones to use in PYM.

Your original photos stay exactly where they are.

Is Smart Fill private?

Yes.

  • The analysis happens on your device as part of the PYM app.

  • Your photos are not sent to a public feed, ad network, or anything like that.

  • Nothing is printed or shared until you confirm and place an order or choose to share.

Smart Fill is built to help you make sense of your memories, not to perform for an audience.

How can I help Smart Fill “get me” better?

A few simple habits make a big difference:

  • Favorite the photos that really matter to you.

  • Edit or crop important shots you want to highlight.

  • Delete obvious junk (accidental photos, totally useless screenshots) if you never need them.

  • When you see Smart Fill pick something you don’t like, simply replace it — over time you’ll notice it feels closer and closer to your taste.

In short

Smart Fill is like a helpful friend going through your camera roll, saying:

“If you don’t have the time or energy to choose, here’s what I think you’ll care about most.”

It looks for real moments, familiar faces, favorites and quality — and gently ignores the noise. You can always change its choices, but you don’t have to start from a blank page.

Your life, your memories. Smart Fill just helps you see the story more clearly.
